Website Maintenance

How Do I Start Managing My Website if I've Never Done It Before?

Starting from zero with website management is intimidating, but you do not need to become a developer to have a well-maintained site. Here is a practical path.

First, understand what you actually have. What platform is your site on (WordPress, Next.js, Webflow, Squarespace)? Who built it? Where is it hosted? Who owns the domain? These four questions are the foundation. If you do not know the answers, start by finding them. Check your email for setup confirmations from the original developer. Look for a hosting invoice in your accounting records.

Second, secure your access. Make sure you have login credentials for your hosting account, your domain registrar, and your CMS. Store these in a password manager. You should not be dependent on a previous developer for access to your own site.

Third, do a baseline check. Go to PageSpeed Insights and test your site load speed. Send a test submission through your contact form. Check that your SSL certificate is valid (look for the padlock icon in your browser). These three checks tell you whether your site has obvious problems right now.

Fourth, decide: DIY or delegate? If your site is on a beginner-friendly platform and you have time to learn, DIY is viable. If your site is on a technical stack (Next.js, custom WordPress) or you do not want to invest learning time, outsource it.

For most small business owners, the time investment of DIY maintenance is not worth it. The monthly cost of a professional plan is lower than the opportunity cost of doing it yourself.

At Freedman Systems, new clients who have never had a maintenance plan get an onboarding audit that documents the baseline state of their site.
